It aint the heart of a creature that is bound in the way that God has set for it. You can find meanness in the least of creatures, but when God made man the devil was at his elbow. A creature that can do anything. Make a machine. And a machine to make the machine. And evil that can run itself a thousand years, no need to tend it. — CORMAC McCARTHY, BLOOD MERIDIAN ![]() And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Mark 16:17-18 | (god leads eddie ash and the devil follows on his heels.) people lose god and eddie brings them back to the flock, ties the whole of the valley's folk together. all it takes is the good word, the sight of snakes wrapped about his arms, not a single one choosing to sink its teeth into his flesh. the mute speak and the crippled walk and eddie smiles like he always does, says all that he's doing is bringing god down to walk amongst the people, ma'am, nothing more. (god leads eddie ash and the devil walks by his side.) never once does he take the hand of another person in anything other than friendship. he speaks of the infinite wisdom of god, of casting out devils from one's house, of the blessed and the damned, and swears in front of god and everybody that he is doing the lord's work. he never speaks of his father nor his mother and his half-sister tells everyone that he drowned in the river on the day of his baptism. (god leaves eddie ash and the devil takes his soul instead.) he preaches wherever he goes, packs the pews and shows off the devils he has tamed, blesses those who take sacrament from him and draws more and more people under the sway of his word. bad things happen when he leaves town but the finger of blame never finds him, never chooses him as a target. god walks with eddie ash, and behind him— a woman, in bright red shoes and a gold band on her finger. (you should know, she says. you remind me of my husband.) no country. an original verse, inspired by the southern gothic, gillian flynn's sharp objects, carnivale, and cormac mccarthy. |
